Public Safety: Law Enforcement
Public Safety is a one year course that introduces you to corrections, law enforcement, military, or security. Through instruction, demonstration, and hands-on scenario based learning, you will learn how to arrest, handcuff, and search a suspect. You will learn how to defend yourself and practice crisis de escalation skills. Using your knowledge of constitutional and criminal law, you and your partner will take field notes, write a report, and testify at a mock trial.
Throughout the year, you will study the U.S. Constitution, focusing on the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments in the Bill of Rights. You will put that knowledge to work as you practice investigating crimes, interviewing victims, and interrogating suspects.
Your learning will be reinforced through field trips to the police academy, the court, the jail, and the prison. You can earn first aid and OSHA certifications as well as 6 free college credits through SMCC.
